Update on launch of Route 18 Brent Winter Shelter December 2010

We had an excellent launch at St Andrew's Church, Sudbury where Reverend Felicity and her team warmly welcomed everyone and provided tea and biscuits. Felicity opened the event and invited Marlon Nelson to speak briefly about the history of the project. Then Jim Sullivan, ex Mayor of Brent spoke about his pleasure at being asked to officiate at this innovative and excellent example of partnership between churches, mosques, the charity sector, Brent Council and local people. Jim was standing in for Cllr Harbhajan Singh, Mayor of Brent who was unable to attend due to illness. Jim was followed by Tariq Dar, Chairman of the Pakistan Community Centre who spoke of his delight at the invitation to participate in the project and how he would promote it amongst his community.

The Ven.Rachel Treweek then spoke about the project being an excellent example of faith groups coming together to practice their faith in action, for the benefit of the community. Jim Sullivan brought the event to a close by cutting the magnificent Route 18 cake made by Ocean of Cakes . We are delighted with the financial support of Brent Council, Ward working funding, and a number of charitable trusts including The Mercers Charitable Foundation, The Archer Trust and Coutts Charitable Foundation.

The Winter Shelter 2010 started on the 13th December. We have received fantastic feedback from the guests who are using the project. They are deeply touched by the warm welcome, delicious food, good accommodation and especially the great company of the church volunteers. To date on 14th December we have 18 guests. Thanks to all of you, and to the wonderful volunteers who work so hard for the homeless.
